The Frugal Inference of Causal Relations

چکیده
Recent approaches to causal modeling rely upon the Causal Markov Condition, which specifies which probability distributions are compatible with a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). Further principles are required in order to choose among the large number of DAGs compatible with a given probability distribution. Here we present a principle that we call frugality. This principle tells one to choose the DAG with the fewest causal arrows. We argue that frugality has several desirable properties compared to the other principles that have been suggested, including the well-known Causal Faithfulness

متن کاملAn Introduction to Inference and Learning in Bayesian Networks
Bayesian networks (BNs) are modern tools for modeling phenomena in dynamic and static systems and are used in different subjects such as disease diagnosis, weather forecasting, decision making and clustering. A BN is a graphical-probabilistic model which represents causal relations among random variables and consists of a directed acyclic graph and a set of conditional probabilities. Structure...
متن کاملAbsence Makes the Thought Grow Stronger: Reducing Structural Overlap Can Increase Inductive Strength
Computational models of analogy have assumed that the strength of an inductive inference about the target is based directly on similarity of the analogs, and in particular on shared higher-order relations. However, in Experiment 1 we show that reducing analogical overlap by eliminating a higher-order causal relation (a preventive cause present in the source) from the target increased inductive ...
متن کاملBounded Rationality: Models of Fast and Frugal Inference
Humans and other animals need to make inferences about their environment under constraints of limited time, knowledge, and computational capacities. However, most theories of inductive inferences model the human mind as a supercomputer like a Laplacean demon, equipped with unlimited time, knowledge, and computational capacities. In this article I review models of fast and frugal inference, that...
متن کاملProduction and Causal Logics for Nonmonotonic Reasoning
We introduce logical formalisms of production and causal inference relations based on input/output logics of [Makinson and van der Torre, 2000]. These inference relations are assigned, however, both standard monotonic semantics, and natural nonmonotonic semantics based on the principle of explanatory closure. The resulting nonmonotonic formalisms will be shown to provide a logical representatio...
